My Data, My Body, My Rights

My Data, My Body, My Rights

As the line between our physical and digital selves becomes increasingly blurry, sexual, and reproductive data rights must be safeguarded as a key lever of bodily autonomy and gender equality.

At Kati Collective, we have been at the forefront of digital sexual and reproductive health for decades. We have witnessed the promise of positive social and health impact come to fruition, smartphones proliferate in places without running water, and the Covid-19 pandemic catapult digital health forward at lightning speed.

But we have also seen and experienced how people are forced to trade away the right to their personal health data – their bodily autonomy -- to access basic health technology information and services.

Women, youth and LGBTQIA+ people face additional challenges and hostilities in accessing SRH care and legal protections and are more likely to experience similar abuse with regards to their health data rights.

Kati Collective and Panorama—women-led organizations with founders that are long-time advocates for social justice -- have joined forces to tackle this significant problem. We are leveraging complementary expertise in building communities of practice and platforms for collaboration to maximize collective impact to convene stakeholders at the intersection of this work.

We intend to develop co-created policy-level recommendations and pathways to action, with the potential advocacy outcomes:

  • Improved awareness and understanding among key stakeholders of the imperative to safeguard sexual and reproductive data rights as a key lever of bodily autonomy and gender equality.

  • Improved alignment and collaboration among key stakeholders on these issues.

  • Improved informed consent language and processes, protection, ownership, governance of SRH data.

The time is now to protect the right to bodily autonomy when accessing basic health information and services through technology. We urge you to join us. We are actively seeking funders to support this critical work.
